Here’s a sample of what occurred on this day in the Lincoln conspiracy trial:
- Witnesses described the arrests of Edman Spangler, Michael O’Laughlen and Lewis Powell
- The attack on Secretary of State William Seward was described
- Lewis Powell was made to put on the clothes he wore when attacking Seward
- Confederate photographs found in Mary Surratt’s boardinghouse were entered into evidence

Throughout May and June of 2020, I am publishing a day by day chronology of the trial of the Lincoln assassination conspirators. This includes almost daily posts announcing the release of what happened at the conspiracy trial 155 years ago. For more information about the creation of this project please click here.
I have read dozens of books on Lincoln over the decades and yet you are teaching me more information of which I was not familiar. Thank you for providing this fascinating coverage of the trial. Chuck Carter, DDS
I’m glad you are enjoying this, Chuck. There are many, many details of the Lincoln conspiracy trial that I knew nothing about before I started this project.
I agree with Charles Carter. My morning coffee now begins with a daily update on this significant trial, gives the reader a real feel to being in the courtroom as it unfolds and provides even more details/insights on the event than any prior narrative I have ever seen.
