Booth’s Pillow

This is one of those relics that I would love to get my hands on today:

In case you were wondering, the chain of custody on this relic is good. Don Ashley was married to Louise “Ruddy” Garrett. Ruddy was the daughter of Robert Clarence Garrett, who was seven years old when Booth died on his father’s farm. Don and Ruddy never had children so what happened to the pillow after their deaths remains a mystery.

Of course this is of great interest to me. Thanks for sharing.

  2. VERY INTERESTING! SINCE I CAN’T HAVE IT, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE A PICTURE OF IT…
THANKS DAVE FOR SO MUCH INTERESTING FACTS.

I am trying to find a basket said to have been used by Henry Woodland to help Thomas Jones convey some food to Booth and Herold in the thicket while they were hiding, but the trail has just recently grown cold. Also, the mantle from Garretts’ house became the property of a NJ man before the house caved in (I think his name was Cummings) , but that trail grew cold, too, many years ago.)

    • Richard,

I had heard stories about the mantle of the Garrett house having been removed but I don’t have any real source for it. Could you send me whatever info you have on relics from the Garrett house?

  4. Great post as always.

  5. Wonderful story, Dave! Never heard of this. I lived in Henrico County for years and still have friends on the Henrico Police Force who may have known this man — I can see what I can do from this end….
    Thanks!

    • Very cool, Betty!

I don’t know if it will help, but in August of 1939, Don Ashley became an assistant clerk of the Henrico courts:

  6. Great post Dave! I would like to know what happened to the gun that shot John Wilkes Booth? I know it was Boston Corbett’s. Was it ever found and preserved?

  7. Fantastic, Dave! Let me look and see what I can find — I’m sure that there are probably some folk at Henrico Police and the courthouse who may have some info on Mr. Ashley I can check!

    Thanks!
