The 12 hour bus tour documents the escape of the assassin through Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. The description here of Mary’s husband is the exact opposite of what her letters reveal about him. And, as far as him not being looked upon as an open secessionist, that’s not what history says. He was listed at the top of most listings of known secessionists on reports that were turned over to the U.S. government.
It’s interesting to see how the press tended to portray Mary has a hard, forceful woman from an early age. Considering the fact that most of her acquaintances gave glowing reports about her during the bad times, I guess we can assume that the reporters and the government were stacking the deck against her. And I say that with good intentions because I happen to be one who thinks that Mary was aware of what was brewing around her.
