Port Conway fisherman and businessman, William Rollins. Rollins was about to leave to tend to his fishing nets on the Rappahannock River when Booth and Herold asked for transportation across. Rollins said he would oblidge them when he was done. By the time Rollins returned, the pair, in the company of three confederate soldiers, had already decided to cross via Jim Thornton’s public ferry instead.
